MapData Services API Suite Overview

There is an ever-increasing need for developers to create a wide variety of location-based solutions and applications - from simple store locators to complex visualisation applications creating mash ups of Big Data and maps, which provide powerful business and location intelligence.

The MDS API is a suite of online API's that enable developers to create engaging applications. It includes geocoding, address auto-complete, base maps and spatial data services, underpinned by some of Australia's most valuable datasets.

Access

Access to the MDS API requires a customer to have a licence agreement and security credentials. For more information, or to get an evaluation, please contact MapData Services.

The Data

Using these APIs, you can access MapData Services' high-value data sets such as addresses, property parcels, building footprints, census boundaries and attributes. The API's can also host customer data that can be used to create engaging visualisations and analysis.

The API's

1.1.2 / Geocode

The MapData Services Geocode API is a HTTP Web service which takes address information and provides a validated address with geographical coordinates and statistical areas.

The converse operation is also available - ie, translate a geographical coordinate into an address.

The API can also translate a GNAF Property ID into an address.

The Geocode API is powered by Geoscape Australia GNAF Australian and NZPost GeoPAF New Zealand Addresses.

1.1.2 /Tile

The MapData Services Tile API is a HTTP Web service that serves raster data in small pieces known as "tiles". You will need to use a mapping API, such as the following, in order to combine the tiles to get a more complete view of the raster data.

MDS Tile API provides Tiles in the Mercator projection for 18 levels/Scales based on the Bing Maps Tile System standard.

The Tile API is powered by MapData Services value added Geoscape Australia and LINZ Road and topography data.

The Base Maps include:

Features / v3.2

The MapData Services Features API is a HTTP Web service enabling our customers to perform spatial searches on their information. The Features API allows web or mobile applications to view markers or clusters of markers on a map or webpage.

The MDS Client Portal allows customers to manage their own data stored in the Features API.

Custom datasets can also be added to the Features API. Contact MDS for further information.

Place

The MapData Services Place API is a HTTP Web service that returns information about places, such as addresses or Points of Interest across Big Data sets. Place requests return locations with latitude and longitude coordinates where available.

The Place API allows the user to perform free text searches filter, cluster and perform calculation functions such as sum and total on requests.

The Place: Suggest API is powered by Geoscape Australia GNAF and GNAF Lite Australian and NZPost GeoPAF New Zealand Addresses.

Custom datasets can also be added to the Place API. Contact MDS for further information.

Shape

The MapData Services Shape API is a HTTP Web service that returns polygon information and its associated attributes, such as demographic or other variables. Shape requests return polygons as latitude and longitude coordinates.

The Shape API allows the user to apply spatial filters on requests such as polygon, nearby and bounding box.

Custom datasets can also be added to the Shape API. Contact MDS for further information.
